Most phones from 2018 onward: iPhone XS/XR and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer plus Z Fold/Flip, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and many recent Xiaomi, Oppo and Motorola models.

iPhone: Settings → Cellular — if you see 'Add eSIM', you're compatible. Android: Settings → search 'eSIM' or 'SIM manager' and look for an Add eSIM option.
Universal check: dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, your phone has eSIM hardware.
A locked phone only accepts SIMs from its home carrier, including eSIMs. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel — most do it free once the device is paid off.
Many mainland-China iPhone models use dual physical SIMs instead of eSIM. Run the *#06# EID check — no EID means no eSIM support.
