Two exceptions to know.

Is your phone unlocked? The two-minute check.
A travel eSIM needs two things: eSIM hardware and a phone that isn't locked to your home carrier. Software rarely gets in the way — eSIM arrived with iOS 12.1, so any iPhone that runs iOS 12.1 or later qualifies, and eSIM-capable Androids need Android 9 or newer.
On iPhone.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Scroll to Carrier Lock (older iOS versions say SIM Lock).
- “No SIM Restrictions” means unlocked — you're ready for a travel eSIM.
If it names your carrier instead, ask them to unlock it — usually free once your contract terms are met.
On Android.
- Wording varies by maker — search Settings for “SIM lock”, or on Samsung check Connections > SIM manager.
- The reliable route: your carrier's app or support line confirms lock status in minutes.
- Bought the phone outright or SIM-free? It's already unlocked.
One more reassurance: adding a travel eSIM never replaces your home SIM. Modern iPhones store eight or more eSIM profiles — two lines active at once on iPhone 13 and later — so your home number stays reachable for calls and banking texts while holiday data runs on the eSIM. And hotspot support varies by plan — the plan card shows it before you pay.
