The Albania eSIM guide.
Albania has gone from best-kept secret to everyone's summer plan, and the reason it still feels like a bit of an adventure is the same reason data matters here — a lot of the good stuff is off the beaten track. The turquoise water at Ksamil, the Ottoman stone houses stacked up the hill at Berat and Gjirokastër, the white-knuckle drive along the Riviera: you'll be checking ferry times over to Corfu, translating a menu that's only in Albanian, and hunting down a beach that isn't on any signpost.
How it works on the day
Almost everyone flies into Tirana (TIA) — for now it's the country's one main airport — so that's where your eSIM wakes up, on Vodafone Albania or One Albania, the moment the wheels touch down. Set it up at home first over Wi-Fi. There's no SIM to buy in a language you don't speak, and nothing standing between you and the hire-car desk.
Choosing your days
A week to ten days along the coast is how most people do Albania, and a mid-size bundle keeps the maps, the photo uploads and the video calls going through it. Stringing it into a bigger Balkans loop — Montenegro one day, North Macedonia the next — is where a larger or multi-country plan earns its place instead. Just here for a Tirana city break? A short day-rate plan is plenty.
Before you land in Albania.
The lek is the currency, and away from the cities cash is often the only option — beach bars, guesthouses and the shared furgon minibuses frequently won't take a card. Live exchange rates and a maps pin to the nearest ATM save the day.
Intercity travel often means a furgon — a minibus that departs once the seats fill rather than to a printed timetable — so a translation app and a live map beat squinting at a hand-written windscreen sign.
A short ferry links Sarandë to Corfu, and in shoulder season the sailing times shift about — worth checking the schedule online the night before rather than at the port with your bags.
Nearly every visitor lands at Tirana (TIA), an hour or more from the southern beaches, so your transfer and hire-car apps are already earning their keep at the baggage belt. A second airport at Vlorë is on the way but not the norm yet.
Discover Albania.

The short version.
A travel eSIM is data only. It sits next to your home SIM, so your number, texts and WhatsApp carry on as normal. Pick unlimited, priced per day, or a fixed bundle of GB if it's mostly maps and messages. Install it on Wi-Fi before you fly — the days only start once it first connects in Albania, and it finds a partner network on its own.
Made for your kind of trip.
