Will your phone work in Europe?

Short answer: almost certainly — but two checks are worth two minutes before you fly. Here's exactly what to verify.

The three checks that matter.

1Network bands — almost certainly finePass by defaultEurope runs GSM-family networks on bands that every iPhone since the 6s, every Galaxy since the S7 and effectively every phone sold since 2016 supports. Unlike the old US/Europe band-split days, a modern phone from anywhere works on European 4G and 5G.
2Is your phone unlocked?Check this oneThe check that actually matters. A carrier-locked phone refuses any other SIM or eSIM — European ones included. If you bought the phone outright it's unlocked; if it came on a carrier contract, check in settings (iPhone: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock) or ask your carrier for the unlock, which is usually free once the contract terms are met.
3Does it support eSIM?30-second checkIf you want to land connected without swapping plastic: iPhone XS/XR (2018) and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, plus most recent mid-range Androids all support eSIM. Dial *#06# — if an EID appears, you're eSIM-ready. Exceptions: many phones sold in mainland China ship without eSIM.

Phone works — now pick how it gets data.

“Working” and “affordable” are different questions. Three honest options for a European trip:

Do nothing (raw roaming)

Your home SIM will attach to European networks — at your carrier's roaming rates. Fine for a weekend of light use on a plan with included roaming; a lottery otherwise.

Carrier day-passes

Predictable but pricey: typically $5–8 per travel day with capped data. Two weeks lands around $80+ and you're still watching a meter.

Travel eSIM (our lane)

Installed before you fly, fixed price agreed up front, unlimited options, covers 41 European countries on one plan — while your home number stays live for calls and WhatsApp.

Phone-in-Europe questions.

Almost certainly yes for the networks — every modern phone supports European 4G/5G bands. The two things to verify: that your phone is carrier-unlocked, and (if you want an eSIM) that it supports eSIM. Dial *#06# — an EID number means eSIM-ready.
